Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, KarÅıyaka Thanks to the âCompost Production Processâ he implemented in Yalı Mahallesi, he transforms market waste into organic fertilizer. The metropolitan municipality will obtain 65 tons of solid organic fertilizer and 30 tons of liquid organic fertilizer from 10 tons of organic waste annually from the district market where it is piloting. The resulting fertilizers will be used in parks and gardens and will be distributed to farmers engaged in agricultural production.
The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has signed exemplary works for sustainable agriculture and ecosystem, has this time started a different work for recycling organic waste from markets to nature. Under the coordination of Ä°ZDOÄA A.Å, one of the enterprises of the Metropolitan Municipality of Izmir KarÅıyaka, the project “Low Emission Zone – District of Waste-Free Life”, carried out with the partnership of the Municipality and the Take Foundation Care of Your Waste, started in Yalı District, which was selected as a pilot area.
As part of the KarÅıyaka project Fruit and vegetable waste is collected after the neighborhood market, which is held every Tuesday and Saturday in Yalı Mahallesi. Waste collected on the market is thrown into the compost production container. Once the 1000 liter container is filled with other inputs, the organic waste is collected as organic fertilizer within a month. The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to both transform organic waste and make the soil more productive through the process of composting. The fertilizer released after composting not only improves the structure and properties of the soil, but also increases its productivity. Organic fertilizers not only increase the water-holding capacity of the soil, but also prevent salinization during dry seasons.
30 tons of solid organic fertilizer and 10 tons of liquid organic fertilizer per year from a market place
KarÅıyaka Saadet ÃaÄlın, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality, pointed out that an awareness campaign is being carried out on ecological urban practices, projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protection of natural resources in Yalı Mahallesi, and said: âOrganic waste turns into compost fertilizer. in the market here. Markets produce organic waste. In the end, the products defined as waste stayed here. In the past, he was sent to the Harmandalı landfill. With this project, while we reduce our landfill waste, we collect organic waste and then ferment it with enzyme additives. We recycle 65 tonnes of organic waste every year in the form of 30 tonnes of solid organic fertilizer and 10 tonnes of liquid organic fertilizer. The product we get is actually plant waste like red tomatoes, yellow corn husks, peppers, and lettuce that look like dirt. In about a month there is a natural fermentation process and it turns into fertilizer at the end of the period. We will use the organic fertilizers we produce both in parks and gardens and in urban agriculture applications. The organic content of our soils is very low, we will support it with our organic fertilizers, and we will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.
