“We are starting Tika Utsav for the 18-44 age group from June 21, and we will complete the administration of the vaccine for this age group,” said Goa CM Pramod Sawant.
PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Monday that the state government will initiate the ‘unlocking’ process in Goa after June 15 and not before, and added that the state cannot think of restarting tourism ” only after having vaccinated the (eligible) population of the state “.
Sawant previously set July 31 as a goal to deliver the first dose to the 18-44 age group. âWe will also administer the second dose (of vaccine) as soon as possible,â Sawant said.
When asked how the state would speed up vaccination, the chief minister said that through Tika Utsav, 80% of the population 45 and over had already received the first dose of the vaccine.
“We are starting Tika Utsav for the 18-44 age group from June 21, and we will complete the administration of the vaccine for this age group,” he said.
“We need to take precautions for another two months until we have completed immunizing 100% of the eligible population.”
Sawant said the recovery rate is now over 92% and the death rate has also dropped. He also said the positivity rate is high in Goa as the state tests everyone with symptoms of Covid.
Sawant also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of the people of the state for making the decision to provide free vaccines to people between the ages of 18 and 44.
The CM also welcomed the decision to provide the second dose of the vaccine within 28 days to seafarers, students and those traveling abroad.
The state government recently extended the state-level curfew until June 14. He also said the state has already started preparing for the third wave.
