Vrabel signed with the Patriots in 2001 and helped the team win three Super Bowls in their eight seasons, becoming one of Belichick’s all-time favorite players. Vrabel is 2-0 as a head coach against the Pats, winning both as an underdog: 2018 regular season 34-10 at Nashville and Foxboro in the wildcard round after the 2019 season, 20-13, in what would be Tom Brady’s last game with New England.
On SportsLine odds to win the AFC seed – remember, only the seed now gets a first round pass – the Titans are +200 favorites, followed by Baltimore (+300), Buffalo (+400), Kansas City (+ 600) and New England (+600). Tennessee currently hold the top spot with an 8-3 record and hold a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Bills and Chiefs. The Titans and Ravens don’t play.
The big injury issue for Tennessee is AJ Brown, who has yet to practice this week with a chest injury. Running back Jeremy McNichols is uncertain with a concussion. The Titans gave up running back Adrian Peterson this week.
Maybe it bodes well for New England on Sunday that the Pats didn’t make the playoffs last year, as Tennessee’s three losses are against non-2020 playoff clubs, including the shocking loss. 22-13 at home last week against Houston.
New England’s five-game winning streak is the best in the NFL and the Pats have allowed just 50 combined points in those five games, lowering their season average to 16.1 points per game, the best of the league. Belichick’s defense hasn’t allowed any scores of any kind in their opponents’ last 19 practices, the longest of any NFL club since 2019, when New England completed 24 consecutive practices.
After shutting out Atlanta in Week 11, the Pats attempt their first straight shutouts since 1982 when they beat Miami 3-0 on December 12 and Seattle 16-0 on December 19.
Tennessee is 5-0 in a row and ATS as an underdog this year, the first team since the 2009 Bengals to start a 5-0 SU season as a dog. New England’s five-game ATS streak is the longest in the NFL.
