More cooperation between Pakistan and China in fertilizer sector needs the hour

BEIJING: China and Pakistan could explore more cooperation to ensure supply of fertilizer to farmers for various crops in Pakistan.

Earlier this year, the Pakistani government approved the immediate import of 50,000 tonnes of urea from China, at a price below the current international level. Besides import and export trade, the two countries can explore more cooperation in the field of fertilizers.

S Li Guang, Secretary General of China Association of Phosphate and Compound Fertilizer Industry, said, “The type and dosage of fertilizers used should be determined according to local conditions and crop characteristics.”

“Farmers not only need to know how much fertilizer to use, but also understand why they have to use it that way.”

The saying “no pain, no gain” does not apply to fertilizer application, and overuse of fertilizer will lead to waste of resources and environmental damage.

Sensible fertilizer use can reduce costs and reduce waste for farmers, getting “twice the result with half the effort”. In addition, improving planting methods can also save the amount of fertilizer to be used on a unit area. Intercropping is a good choice.

“This is a strawberry-onion intercrop. At the last stage of planting strawberries, onion seedlings are sown. Onion can secrete some bactericidal substances during its growth, which has the best effect on improving soil conditions for strawberries.

In addition, potassium fertilizer will also be used for strawberries to improve the sweetness of strawberries. Ordinary onions are spicy, but interspersed onions are sweet by absorbing fertilizer for strawberries, which have a delicious and unique taste,” said Zhu Ning from the Agricultural Technology Extension Station of Changping District, Beijing. .

Some new fertilizers like organic fertilizers and water-soluble fertilizers also deserve attention. Compared with traditional fertilizers, new fertilizers have the characteristics of high efficiency, compound and slow release.

“At the start of planting, some organic fertilizers, such as chicken manure and sheep manure, will be added to make the soil looser and richer in organic matter. In the later stage of planting, more water-soluble fertilizers will be used for spreading.

“In addition, in recent years, growers and consumers have increasingly demanded the taste and quality of strawberries. Therefore, some fertilizers such as seaweed fertilizer, fish protein fertilizer and Huangpu acid fertilizer are used to improve fruit quality,” Zhu Ning added.

“Based on the current experience, the final demand is for new fertilizers, not just the basic fertilizer layering. A full set of solutions should be provided according to the local environment, plant types, etc. Fertilizers will make it much easier for farmers to improve plant nutrition throughout the process,” Li Guang said.

Chinese fertilizer companies are eager to explore more cooperation opportunities to ensure farmers’ fertilizer supply for crops in Pakistan.

“We are also researching soil conditioners. Next, we plan to introduce fertilizers and soil amendments in Pakistan. We will also bring our cultivation way of field management, including how to raise seedlings better, to Pakistan to carry out more cooperation,” said Qi Liying, executive deputy general manager of Tianjin Tianlongzaitian Agricultural Science and Technology Co., ltd.

Data shows that the area of cultivated land in Pakistan has increased by two million hectares in the past two years, and 2021 is the year with the highest urea sales in Pakistan’s history. It is predicted that if urea supply cannot be guaranteed, the annual wheat yield in Pakistan could decrease by 5-10%.
