The Tokyo Olympics triumph is over and dusted off for star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who now eyes success for years to come as he arrives in Chula for his off-season training.

Chopra will train at world-class facilities here for 90 days with coach Klaus Bartoneitz after the Sports Authority of India approved a proposal in record time last Friday.

“It’s time to put the past to rest and focus on the future. I arrived for my off-season training and can’t wait to start the process of improvement again,” Chopra tweeted.

The proposal, put forward by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), was approved within four hours to ensure Chopra could fly on Sunday.

The approved cost to train at the prestigious Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center under the Target Olympic Podium Program (TOPS) will be Rs 38 lakh.

“Immensely grateful to the DG sir, @Media_SAI, the TOPS and @afiindia teams and everyone involved in achieving this goal,” wrote Chopra who sent the 87.85m javelin to Tokyo on August 7 to clinch. India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics.

Under the previous plan, Chopra was supposed to travel to Potchefstroom, where he trained earlier in 2019-20, but was scrapped due to the novel COVID-19 strain in South Africa.

Given the uncertainty around the world, SAI decided not to wait for the mission’s Olympic cell meeting to approve the proposal.

Chopra thus began her preparation for the 2022 World Championships in Athletics, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the Asian Games in China.

After winning the historic gold in Tokyo, Chopra had expressed his desire to win a medal at the World Championships in Athletics which will take place in Eugene (USA) from July 15 to 24. He is the defending Commonwealth Games and Asian Games champion.

The state-of-the-art Chula Vista Center, spanning 155 acres, is one of the best training and competition venues in the world.
