ADM program can help mitigate soaring fertilizer prices

As China focuses on its own problems at home with a limited power supply, it has imposed a moratorium on exports of phosphate fertilizers until next June, while also limiting the export amount of all fertilizers. In the United States and Europe, natural gas prices have also skyrocketed. It is the main raw material for much of the world’s nitrogenous fertilizers. Thus, the fertilizer supply chain and pricing issues intensify.

Since 2017, the ADM Farm Direct Fertilizer program has been trying to help farmers manage the increasing risk that we are currently seeing.

“Our thinking process is to work more directly with producers to help them capitalize on our investment in river terminal systems and save them a margin on the fertilizer side,” says Luke Halter, Territory Manager for ADM Farm Direct Fertilizer in southern Indiana, Kentucky and southeastern Illinois.

Halter says it’s easy to get started with the new Producer Portal which launched about a year ago.

“It’s an app that you can download to a smartphone or go to and get a new account. You can access fertilizer prices based on your zip code, and this is a great starting point that will put you in touch with a Farm Direct representative who is a representative for your area.

Farmers can better control fertilizer costs by taking advantage of deferred values to lock in prices.

“One thing we do offer is the ability to book twelve months in advance, which most outlets don’t allow guys to do. So when you sell grain, you can spread your risk by going ahead and pricing your fertilizers. “

He explains that there is a minimal cost to get started and that there are access terminals all over the Midwest.

“Some inland terminals and several on the river system,” said Halter. “As far as the equipment goes, a guy really only needs a spreader, or the liquid side of a few storage tanks, so a pretty minimal investment to start. We usually book in two month windows, so a guy can access and order based on their delivery needs and usage needs.

Halter added that ADM Farm Direct Fertilizer is working with Meridian and some flatbed storage companies to help growers access different storage programs.
