Accurate, scientific and highly effective fertilizer is the future


The Dutch company Van Iperen was founded in 1921. This fertilizer manufacturer has a corporate history of more than 100 years. Gary He, China Director of Greenhouse Horticulture at Van Iperen, recently spoke about developments in the Chinese fertilizer industry.

Several series of unique and comprehensive crop nutrition solutions
“Van Iperen has just celebrated its 100th anniversary. We have provided countless growers with complete plant nutrition solutions and products for over a century. After entering the Chinese market, we first focused on cash crops such as fruits and vegetables, and we now cover major cash crops in the Chinese market, including vegetables from northern settlement farms such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and eggplants, as well as apples and pears, as well as produce from southern farms such as oranges, bananas and Hami Melons.We have also started participating in staple crop markets such as potatoes and rice.We now supply Van Iperen’s unique and complete plant nutrition solution to many Chinese farmers.

When asked what makes Van Iperen products unique, Gary He replied, “Van Iperen offers a rich and diverse product range, including single-substance and compound products with high, medium and low percentages of ‘trace elements, as well as algae.Van Iperen also supplies its own IPE® technology for phosphate enrichment.Products based on IPE® technology are extremely popular in the Chinese market, especially the liquid fertilizer “Dichisu “. The product helps protect the root system from saline soil damage and encourages the taproot to burrow deeply, while stimulating hair root growth. In addition to root system benefits, this liquid fertilizer improves also the buffering capacity of soil solutions, stabilizes the pH and EC of the soil and increases the level of fertilizer efficiency. Not only is the plant more resistant, but the fertilizer “Di chisu” also improves soil composition and soil permeability capacity. Another of our products, called Wake Up, is based on a potassium carboxylate formula which is radically different from potassium based products on the market. The potassium elements in Wake Up are extracted from plant material and therefore have a greater affinity with crops. Wake Up is more easily and quickly absorbed by plants than potassium-based mineral products. Wake Up helps fruit development and improves fruit sugar content. That’s why Wake Up is so popular with growers, whether they use soil-based or hydroponic growing methods.”

IPE® Phosphate Enrichment Technology

For a long time, most growers applied fertilizer based on experience, instead of scientific experimentation, analysis, evaluation and calculation. They blindly apply fertilizer and don’t know if the volume is too much or not enough. The waste of fertilizer increases the cost price. Excess fertilizer also damages and pollutes groundwater and soil. The floor does indeed suffer from “gout”. Spot application of fertilizer can help reduce soil fixation, but this is not always enough. The most important concern for producers is to produce stable quality agricultural products and sell them through stable sales channels. For Chinese producers, sales channels are somewhat complicated and market conditions for various products fluctuate regularly. This also affects the terms of sale for producers. Sustainable supply relies on stable storage costs and lower profit margins
Commodity prices have been on the rise for some time now. Van Iperen prepared for this scenario: first, they developed more detailed and accurate product supply plans that better connected Van Iperen’s headquarters in the Netherlands with other locations. The production of the product is organized in time and the loading space is reserved in advance. Second, there are several fertilizer storage facilities throughout the country. And each facility has a strict “red line” for the amount of fertilizer on hand. The red line is an advance warning that prompts the manager to order additional supplies. Third, warehouses prevent the price from rising, or at least rising too much, by avoiding the pressure of a large inventory. Asked about the future development of China’s fertilizer industry, Gary He replied that Chinese agricultural enterprises will pay more attention to environmental protection and green planting in the future. They are also interested in technologies for the agricultural IoT and the integration of supply chain processes. Additionally, Chinese agricultural companies hope to safely produce large volumes of high-quality agricultural products using science-based fertilizers. Growers will use fertilizers at a completely new, precise and efficient level, taking into account the specific requirements of various crops and guiding growers on the scientific principles behind the use of fertilizers. These are the pressing issues that fertilizer companies in China are considering. The biggest trend in the Chinese fertilizer market is the combination of effective, high-quality products and specialized and reliable technological support.

At the same time, changes in planting methods will also affect the development of the fertilizer industry. In the Netherlands, hydroponics has developed rapidly in recent years. This development has been fueled by growers in high tech glass greenhouses, high quality fresh cut flower plantations and berry plantations. Hydroponics often uses a substrate of coir, which helps growers avoid the traditional problems of soil-based crop production.
